Tesla AI5 (HW5) Chip: Release Date, What It Will Run, and Whether Your Car Can Get One

No Tesla you can buy today has an AI5 computer. Tesla says it completed the final AI5 chip design in April 2026, but the chip still has to be built, tested and ramped. The latest public target for volume production is mid-2027. Tesla hasn’t announced an upgrade path from AI4 (often called HW4) to AI5 for cars already on the road.

AI5 and HW5 are the same thing

Tesla used to name its self-driving computers “Hardware 3” and “Hardware 4.” It now calls them AI3, AI4 and AI5, after the main chip. When people search for HW5 they mean AI5, the inference chip that runs Tesla’s driving software inside the vehicle (and, Tesla says, in its Optimus robot). It is not a training chip. Training runs on Tesla’s data-center clusters, where Dojo is a separate project.

Where AI5 stands as of October 2026

  • Design finished: Tesla’s First Quarter 2026 Update (filed April 22, 2026) says it completed the final chip design of AI5 in April. Elon Musk announced the tape-out on X on April 15, as Electrek reported.
  • No production date in Tesla’s filing: the April update doesn’t give a ship date or name a foundry.
  • Volume production target: mid-2027. Tesla moved it there in November 2025, according to the same Electrek report. Tape-out to volume for an automotive chip typically takes 12 to 18 months.
  • Original promise: in June 2024 Musk said AI5 would be in cars in the second half of 2025. That date has passed.

Tesla’s second-quarter update in July focused on spending and factory timing. It dropped the plan to reach Cybercab “volume production” in 2026, as TechCrunch reported, and didn’t add a new AI5 date.

Who makes the chip

Musk has said AI5 will be made by both TSMC and Samsung. Reporting since the tape-out ties AI5 mainly to TSMC and the follow-on AI6 to Samsung’s 2nm line in Taylor, Texas. Tesla’s own filing names neither for AI5. It does describe a Tesla-owned research fab on the Gigafactory Texas campus, which is a longer-term project and not where AI5 is being produced today.

How fast will it be?

Musk has described AI5 as up to 10 times more powerful than AI4. That is Tesla’s claim. No independent benchmark exists, because there is no production silicon in customers’ hands. Treat any specific TOPS figure you see online as unconfirmed until Tesla publishes a spec sheet.

Which products get AI5 first

  • Cybercab: started pilot production in Austin on AI4, not AI5. Tesla has said it needs a large stock of finished AI5 boards before switching, which Electrek reported isn’t expected before mid-2027. Our Cybercab guide covers where it runs today.
  • Model 3, Model Y and other cars: Tesla hasn’t named the first car model or model year to ship with AI5.
  • Optimus: Musk has described AI5 as a chip for both cars and Optimus, but Tesla hasn’t said when the robot gets it.

Can you upgrade your current Tesla to AI5?

Tesla hasn’t announced any AI4-to-AI5 retrofit, paid or free. The only current computer upgrade Tesla documents is for much older cars moving to the AI3 generation. If you’re deciding whether to buy now or wait, here is what is known:

  • Tesla’s Robotaxi service runs on Model Y cars with AI4 today, so AI5 is not required for Tesla’s current ride-hailing service.
  • Cars with AI3 (HW3) already have a different, more limited FSD path. Our FSD price and HW3/HW4 guide explains what each gets.
  • Any AI5 car is at least a 2027 purchase based on Tesla’s own timing.

What to watch next

Tesla reports third-quarter results on October 21, 2026. The next things that would change this page are a named first vehicle with AI5, a published spec sheet, or a confirmed start of volume production. Musk has also said AI6 and a training chip called Dojo 3 are in development. Neither has a public ship date.
