Universal Robots (UR) sells collaborative robot arms from 3 kg to 35 kg of payload, and since September 14, 2026 it has three generations on the market at once: the e-Series, the UR Series and the new Gen 7 g-Series. UR doesn’t publish prices. You buy through its sales team or a local partner, and the quote covers the arm, controller, tooling and integration.
UR is a Danish company founded in Odense in 2005 and owned by the US test-equipment maker Teradyne since 2015, according to its company history page. Its homepage says it has sold more than 100,000 cobots. Teradyne also owns the mobile-robot maker MiR, covered in our MiR robots guide.
Which UR cobot fits which payload
Payload is the fastest first filter, then reach. The model names now carry both: the number after “UR” is the payload class and the number after the dash is the reach in millimeters.
| Model | Payload | Reach | Generation |
|---|---|---|---|
| UR3e | 3 kg | 540 mm | e-Series |
| UR7e | 7.5 kg | 920 mm | e-Series |
| UR8 Long | 8 kg | 1,750 mm | 2025 launch |
| UR10g | 8 kg (10 kg extended) | 1,750 mm | g-Series |
| UR12e | 12.5 kg | 1,300 mm | e-Series |
| UR15 | up to 17.5 kg | 1,300 mm | 2025 launch |
| UR17g | 15 kg (17.5 kg extended) | 1,300 mm | g-Series |
| UR18g | 18 kg | 950 mm | g-Series |
| UR20 | 20 kg (25 kg extended) | 1,750 mm | UR Series |
| UR30 | 30 kg (35 kg extended) | 1,300 mm | UR Series |
Figures are from the Universal Robots homepage and, for the UR8 Long and UR15, their 2025 launch pages, checked October 23, 2026. The homepage currently shows only the g-Series, UR20, UR30 and three e-Series arms; ask UR whether the UR8 Long and UR15 are still quoted in your region. “Extended” payload is a higher rating UR quotes for some arms under restricted conditions, so size your gripper and part against the standard figure first.
Older names you may see in quotes and on the used market, such as UR5e, UR10e and UR16e, no longer appear on the current homepage. If a supplier offers one, ask whether it is new stock, refurbished, or a substitute for a current model.
What the Gen 7 g-Series changed
UR announced the g-Series at IMTS on September 14, 2026, with three arms: UR10g-1750, UR17g-1300 and UR18g-950. The arms come with new hardware around them:
- CB7 Core controller, replacing the control box used by earlier generations.
- TP7 teach pendant and an SP7 Smart Panel.
- PolyScope X as the programming software, with ROS 2 support and open APIs.
UR’s FAQ lays out the three generations as e-Series (Gen 5, 2018), UR Series (Gen 6, 2022) and g-Series (Gen 7, 2026), and says some e-Series and UR Series arms can run PolyScope X with Gen 7 hardware. If you already own UR arms, ask your partner which of yours qualify before you plan a mixed fleet; it decides whether your programs and operator training carry over.
The rest of the 2025 additions fill gaps in the range. The UR15 is a fast mid-payload arm, and the UR8 Long (September 8, 2025) pairs a light payload with 1,750 mm of reach for welding and machine tending where the part is far from the base.
Software, accessories and AI
Every current UR arm is programmed from the teach pendant, either in PolyScope 5 on older controllers or PolyScope X on newer ones. The UR+ program lists more than 500 certified grippers, sensors, software packages and safety accessories that plug into the arm, which is the main reason integrators pick UR for small cells: a vacuum gripper or screwdriver from the UR+ catalog usually installs without custom wiring.
For AI-driven tasks such as bin picking, UR offers an AI Accelerator kit that runs on PolyScope X, first shown at ROSCon 2024. If you’re comparing it with other approaches to putting a learned model on an arm, our map of physical AI companies shows where model makers and arm makers split the work.
How to buy a UR cobot
- Pick the arm by payload, reach and the space around the part. Our guide to choosing a robot arm by payload, reach and accuracy walks through the numbers.
- Contact UR. The homepage lists “Contact Sales” and live demo requests, sales@universal-robots.com and +1 844-462-6268 in the US. UR routes most buyers to a local partner who sells and supports the arm.
- Get a quote for the whole cell, not only the arm. Gripper, mounting, safety assessment, programming and training are often a larger share than the arm itself. Our breakdown of what a cobot quote actually includes lists the lines to check.
- Train your staff. UR Academy offers free online courses, plus paid in-class and virtual training with certified trainers.
When you commission the cell, check the tool center point setting first, because a wrong TCP shows up as path errors from the first run; see how robot TCP offsets keep the tool tip in place.
How UR fits against the big industrial makers
UR only makes cobots. FANUC (CRX), ABB (GoFa and PoWa), KUKA (LBR iisy) and Yaskawa (HC series) all sell cobots too, alongside their large industrial arms; our cobot companies comparison lines them up with Doosan, Techman and others. If your plant already runs one of those brands, staying with its cobot keeps a single controller family and spare-parts supplier; if you’re starting from scratch, UR’s accessory catalog and training are its strongest arguments. For the bigger arms, see our pages on KUKA’s lineup and ABB Robotics.
