An Honor humanoid called Lightning (闪电) won the 2026 Beijing E-Town humanoid robot half marathon on April 19, 2026, running the 21.1 km course in 50:26 with autonomous navigation, Xinhua reported. That is faster than the human half-marathon world record of 57:20. In the first race a year earlier, Tiangong Ultra won in 2:40:42 and only six robots finished. The next race is set for April 18, 2027, and pre-registration is open.

Sources: Xinhua for the winners, field and cutoff; Sixth Tone for the 102 registrations and 47 finishers; 36Kr for 2nd and 3rd place and the organizer count; iRunFar for the 2025 finish count and human times. Honor teams took the top six places in 2026. Lightning stands 169 cm tall on 95 cm legs and changed its battery once, at 10.6 km.
Why the fastest robot in 2026 didn’t win
A remote-controlled Honor robot crossed the line first, in 48:19, Smithsonian Magazine noted. For 2026 the organizers multiplied remote-controlled times by 1.2, which put that run at about 57:59 and handed the title to the autonomous Lightning. About 40% of teams chose autonomous navigation.
Humanoid half marathon rules in 2026
- Two categories: autonomous navigation and remote control; remote-control times are weighted by 1.2 before ranking.
- Battery swaps: allowed at supply stations without a penalty, but the clock keeps running. Swaps elsewhere only in emergencies, with a time penalty.
- Backup robots: at most two per team, adding 15 minutes the first time and 20 the second.
- Handlers: up to three per team, who may touch the robot only when a referee confirms a swap, a robot change or a fall.
- Course: 21.0975 km from Kechuang 17th Street to Nanhaizi Park, with more than 10 terrain types.
The rules come from 36Kr’s rule summary and the Beijing municipal government. In 2025 the rules were looser: a handler ran beside each robot, battery swaps were unlimited, and swapping in a substitute robot cost 10 minutes.
What changed between the two races
The 2025 winner needed three battery swaps, and the rest of the field failed to finish inside 3 h 10 min. A year later 47 robots finished and the winner averaged about 2:23 per km. Two things drove the jump: purpose-built running robots (Honor’s team borrowed liquid cooling from its phones) and rules that pushed teams toward autonomy.
The race measures endurance running on a prepared course, which is a different skill from factory or household work. Robots that win races and robots that are deployed in plants are mostly different machines; our humanoid robot companies list sorts makers by who sells and who has customers.
